Slot machine are among the most popular gaming devices in casinos, their easy usage and play makes them popular among seasoned gamblers and patriots of casinos. They have a lot of names; this is because of their acceptability compared to other casino games which are banned in most parts of the world. In America they are known as slot machine, the slots in Canada and in Australia they are known as poker machine.
The slot machine is a gambling device similar to a video game in arcades, but they contain three or more reels which rotate randomly when a trigger button is pushed. Before the button was adopted, they had levers at their side which made the reels spin and were named “one-arm bandits” together with their ability to leave the player penniless. Because of the use of coins, the machines have an installed currency detector that authenticates the money inserted to play. The payout to the player depends on the pattern which displays itself after play; symbols in the slots dictate what the player will get when the machine stops. A slot machine is a must in all casinos of repute and in American casinos they constitute almost 70 percent of their revenue.
In order to play at a slot machine one has to insert coins in the machine or in newer versions a paper barcode is bought and is inserted in the designated machine. The player then pushes a button or slides a lever, there are no prior skills required for the game but an illusion is created by the players that skill is needed but it is only a game of chance. Each player admires the prospect of winning money from the machine, when the machine matches three symbols in the case of a three reel machine he will have won. The symbols range from images of fruits, numbers, bells hearts or letters and are usually brightly colored and easily recognizable. The payout is paid to the player instantly in the form of cash or value like an extra game after a win.
Some casinos at times like to attract more players to play at the slot machines by linking several machines. This linking allows the machines to offer a jackpot, each machine contributes a small amount to the progressive jackpot and it is awarded to the player who played at the machine. The payout is usually larger than the amount paid at a single slot machine. The machine manufacturers normally do this and they are responsible for paying the jackpot.
Old slot machines which operated on mechanical systems were easily prone to cheats and scams, the example of tying a coin with a plastic wire. The coin would be validated by the coin acceptors and the player would be awarded the credits. The plastic wire would spin and cause the coin to exit to the payout tray and the player could play an infinite number of times. Nowadays these scams are slowly becoming obsolete because the slot machine is being improved to ensure no due advantage to the gambler
